Treating substance abuse in Teenagers
Substance abuse in Teenagers is problematic for many reasons. One of the primary reasons is, teenagers are at a critical phase of development. So, whatever actions they take has a profound input in shaping their future.
If Teenagers begin to abuse substances at this stage, it is very dangerous because there is a high tendency that the habit would be carried into adulthood. And soon, they become addicted in the process.
For treating substance abuse, there is a treatment plan available that ensures that teenagers get their lives back together.
Usually, the first phase in the treatment of substance abuse in Teenagers is detoxification. Detoxification is the removal of harmful substances in the body. For someone who is hooked on substances like alcohol and drugs, there is a likely chance that it would be in their system.
During detoxification, harmful substances which were a build-up of chemicals from drugs and alcohol are ejected from the body. Detoxification is best done under the supervision of health professionals.
Also, Teenagers will be required to undergo Teen drug rehab, which is focused mainly on therapy. Depending on the severity of the addiction, the Teenager would either opt for outpatient or inpatient rehab.
Usually, Teenagers would be required to go through the Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy phase. The Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy phase is also referred to as Psychotherapy. And it is the phase where the Teenager is thoroughly assessed by an addiction counselor.
During the Cognitive-Behavioral Phase, the addiction counselor helps the Teenager to understand more about his addiction and the root cause. This phase is important because the Teenager would find it challenging to cope during rehab if he does not have a good idea on how his addiction problem works.
There are other forms of treatment of substance abuse like Family therapy which is needed to bring the Teenager and his family together. Typically, when addiction is in the picture, there is a tendency for friction in communication to exist.
It is important for families and loved ones to always look out for their Teenagers because their current stage of growth and development can be hampered by substance abuse.
